Thanks to all of you who have donated to MOWCF, our four kids are in school—three for the first time in their lives! It is a huge privilege for kids in Liberia to go to school, and this opportunity has the power to changes these kids’ lives forever!
USA today reported millions of kids across Africa live in homes where the average income is less than $300 a year. In Africa, education is not free. Parents or guardians have to choose between feeding their families and sending their kids to school, which can cost up to $100 a year. Clearly, the fees required to send kids to school greatly impact a family living on $300 a year. Not being able to send children to school due to finances, however, puts these children and further generations in a perpetual cycle of poverty. Kids growing up without an education can’t get better paying jobs as adults. They, in turn, are forced to feed their children rather than send them to school, and the cycle continues…
Getting an education changes these kids’ lives and their future children’s lives forever! They learn reading, writing, and math, building skills that pave the way to literacy, higher level education, and better paying, more stable jobs and income in the future. Down the road, these children will be able to put their children through school. The power of educating these kids is truly far-reaching! UNICEF also brings attention to the power of education in spreading health and hygiene awareness. The health education provided by schools plays a vital role in helping children protect themselves against diseases like HIV and AIDS, as well as other diseases that are easily spread in a country where running water and basic needs to maintain proper health and hygiene practices are few and far between. In a country where medical care is not free, even to the very poor, this education saves lives!
